GEORGIA HOSTS AIIB NEGOTIATIONS



6TH Round of Chief Negotiators’ Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was held in Tbilisi, Georgia on August 24-25, 2015. Representatives of 57 founding nations participated in the keynote event of international magnitude.
Consensus was reached at the meeting on the nomination of Mr. Jin Liqun as President of AIIB. He served as a General Secretary of the Bank in the interim period. Statements were made today by Mr. David Lezhava, Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia, Mr. Jin Liqun, AIIB President and Mr. Shi Yaobin, Deputy Minister of Finance of the People’s Republic of China at ExpoGeorgia.
“This was the first meeting since signing the AIIB Incorporation Agreement on June 29, 2015. Among other issues, we discussed such important topic as the selection of AIIB President. I am delighted that we succeeded in this. President Designee is a person, who is very committed to make the AIIB an effective institution. He knows Georgia and has a positive attitude towards our country. Membership of Georgia in AIIB allows us to attract additional resources for infrastructure projects” noted Mr. David Lezhava, Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia.
Mr. Shi Yaobin, Deputy Minister of Finance of the People’s Republic of China thanked the host country and Ministry of Finance of Georgia for ample organization of the event at a commanding, high level. As he noted, AIIB President has been selected on the grounds of three guiding principles: transparency, openness and merit.

“Consensus has been reached at the meeting on the selection of Mr. Jin Liqun, current General Secretary of AIIB. It is a very important stage in the history of the Bank. Mr. Liqun was very actively engaged in the process since its incorporation. We hope that his knowledge and experience, exposure to international financial institutions (IFIs) will greatly contribute to the successful operation of AIIB and its investments in our member countries, including Georgia” noted Mr. Shi Yaobin, Deputy Minister of Finance of the People’s Republic of China.

Mr. Jin Liqun, President Designee of AIIB thanked the member states for the expressed trust.
“I am delighted to visit Georgia again. I understand the great responsibility that is assumed by the selection of AIIB President. I will do my best to make the Bank successful in all its member countries. I promise that it will be guided solely by best international practice and standards. I hope that AIIB will start its operation till the end of the year and results of our work will serve as a role model for other regions. New IFI will focus on infrastructure projects and aim at the development of infrastructure fit to 21st century needs” noted Mr. Jim Liqun, AIIB President.
He believes that AIIB will be guided with the following principles: openness, transparency, responsibility and accountability.
“I wish to thank the Ministry of Finance of Georgia for organizing the negotiations at a very high level. Georgia will always remain in my mind and heart” added Mr. Liqun, AIIB President.
